The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Thursday, predicted heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and their adjacent region over the next two to three days.

A depression originating from central India is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rain, added IMD.

According to the latest IMD update at the time of filing this report, the system was located around 50 kilometres south-southeast of Agra and 50 kilometres north-northeast of Gwalior. It is expected to continue moving towards the north-northeast direction and gradually weaken on Friday.

The weather department stated that Uttarakhand is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall from September 12 to 14, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, East Uttar Pradesh & East Rajasthan on 12 and 13 September, it added.

The depression is expected to bring strong wind at a speed of 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph over southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas of Northwest Madhya Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan and south Haryana, predicts the weather department.

The rain is expected to bring flash floods in certain areas. As a precautionary measure, the weather department advised the residents to avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor activities, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

While it has asked to keep an emergency kit with essentials like food, water, medication, and flashlights ready and to monitor local news to stay updated about the weather.

It further advised the residents, who live in flood-prone areas, to ensure that electrical appliances are turned off, and important items are stored at higher levels.
