During his earlierr tenure with the BJP, Barrackpore’s MP Arjun Singh faced trouble from dissatisfied saff ron party workers and supporters. Following his formal return to the BJP in Delhi on Friday, tensions flared in the industrial belt of Barrackpore over his possible candidature in the Lok Sabha polls. Posters against Arjun Singh were spotted at the Barrackpore station since yesterday, reading: “Bhag Arjun bhag” (Go Arjun Go).

While those responsible for the posters remain unnamed, Arjun Singh has accused Trinamul Congress (TMC) candidate and Naihati MLA Partho Bhowmick of instigating the protests. Despite the BJP’s denial of factionalism, sources revealed that all 23 mandals under Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency have leaders who began conveying opposition to Arjun Singh to the district and state leadership on Wednesday night.

Dissatisfied voices within the party claim that Arjun Singh’s failure to secure a TMC ticket prompted him to abandon his promises and switch parties for personal gain. Some suggest that Arjun’s personality played no role in garnering votes for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda in 2019 and he is unlikely to secure victory in 2024 without the BJP’s support.

Asked about the dissatisfaction within the BJP, Trinamul candidate and Naihati MLA minister Partho Bhowmick stated: “I prefer not to comment on other political parties. However, I believe those who have dedicated themselves to a party for a long time deserve respect and recognition within the party.”
