14th Siliguri Mahakuma Book Fair begins 30 Nov
The state-sponsored 14th Siliguri Mahakuma Book Fair is set to take place from 30 November to 6 December 2024 at Baghajatin Park.

The fair will continue till 23 March Principal, Ghoshpukur College in Siliguri, Dr Uma Majhi inaugurated the fair today in presence of Debdoot Mukherjee, assistant director, National Jute Board and Rizwanuz Zaman, young professional, National Jute Board. Around 19 jute entrepreneurs and MSME jute units from different parts of the country are showcasing their environment-friendly products. One of them was from north Bengal.
Jute entrepreneurs have displayed jute consumer products like jute handicrafts, dolls, fancy bags, gift items, wall hangings, footwear, earrings, floor coverings and other products. According to Debdoot Mukherjee, the golden fibre Jute is an eco-friendly and biodegradable fibre.
Today, jute is looked upon not only as a major textile fibre, but also as a raw material for manufacturing products which protects the environment and maintains ecological balance. “National Jute Board represents interests of different sectors including growers and workmen of jute and producer and exporter of jute goods.

The Indian jute sector comprises mills and a large number of small and micro units. India is the world’s largest producer of raw jute and jute goods,” Mr Mukherjee said, adding, “The exports of jute diversified products have increased to Rs 1,726 crore during 2021-22 (nearly 46% of total export value of jute goods).” “Total exports of jute products during 2021-22 was recorded at USD 508 million that is INR 37,856 million and during 2022-23 recorded at USD 424.08 million or INR 35106.02 million,” he added.
