On Modi’s Sandeshkhali attack, TMC’s Brijbushan Sharan Singh counter

TMC asked where was capital punishment law when convicts in Bilkis Bano case were freed.

In a sharp retort to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attack on West Bengal government over Sandeshkhali issue, the ruling TMC on Wednesday questioned his silence when women were beaten up for protesting against BJP MP Brijbushan Sharan Singh.

During his Nari Shakti Vandan Abhinandan programme in Barasat, West Bengal, Modi targetted Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government over the alleged sexual assault of women in Sandeshkhali.

“TMC government can never provide protection to women whereas, the BJP government has decided to award life imprisonment for heinous crimes like rape,” Modi said.

He further said the Centre had arranged for a ‘Women Helpline’ for easy registration of FIRs but the TMC govt was not letting it operate in West Bengal.

Reacting to Modi’s charges, the TMC leader asked,”Where was your women’s helpline when the Delhi Police was beating up the women protesting against your minister Brijbushan Sharan Singh?”

Brijbushan Singh, a powerful BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, is accused of sexually assaulting women wrestlers. The police has filed a chargesheet in the case but MP is yet to be arrested despite protests from the wrestlers.

On Modi’s capital punishment law claim, said, “Where was your capital punishment for the rapists of Bilkis Bano who were felicitated by the workers of your party?”

The TMC also shared a protest by Sikh community women in Kolkata against Suvendu Adhikari. The women wanted to meet PM Modi to raise the issue of Khalistani slur.

“In a powerful demonstration, Sikh community women hit the streets to protest, requesting PM @narendramodi to meet them and address Suvendu Adhikari’s Khalistani slur. Expressing their outrage against the disrespect to their pride, identity, and turban, they burnt Adhikari’s effigy. Modiji, where is the ACCOUNTABILITY?” the TMC asked.
