Diljit Dosanjh recently spilled the beans on his initial doubts surrounding the much-anticipated Amar Singh Chamkila biopic, helmed by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. In a candid chat during a press conference for Netflix, Diljit shared his journey from skepticism to embracing the project wholeheartedly.
The upcoming Netflix flick, slated for release on April 12, delves into the life of the iconic singer Amar Singh Chamkila, whose life was tragically cut short at the tender age of 27. Diljit, who plays a pivotal role in the film alongside Parineeti Chopra, confessed that he initially harbored reservations about how Bollywood would handle the sensitive subject matter.
Reflecting on his apprehensions, Diljit candidly admitted, “When I first heard about Bollywood taking on the Chamkila story, I had my doubts. I even attempted a similar project called Jodi, but due to rights issues, it remained a fiction. So, naturally, I questioned if they could do justice to it.”
However, fate took an unexpected turn during the pandemic-induced hiatus when Imtiaz Ali reached out to Diljit with an intriguing proposition. “I was taken aback when Imtiaz sir contacted me. Initially, I feared legal repercussions, but to my surprise, he offered me a role in his project,” Diljit recounted with a chuckle.
What ultimately swayed Diljit’s opinion was Imtiaz’s unique vision for the biopic. “Imtiaz sir’s perspective was refreshingly different. He shed light on aspects of Chamkila’s life even I wasn’t aware of. Chamkila was not just a singer; he was a composer, a performer—all in one package. Learning this made me realize the significance of bringing his story to the big screen,” Diljit remarked, his eyes gleaming with pride.
In the end, Diljit’s reservations gave way to admiration and respect for Imtiaz’s unwavering commitment to honoring Chamkila’s legacy. “Imtiaz sir’s passion and dedication to this project are contagious. I am honored to be part of a film that pays homage to a cultural icon like Amar Singh Chamkila,” Diljit concluded, his voice tinged with excitement for audiences to experience the magic of Chamkila’s story unfold onscreen.
