Sanjay Leela Bhansali talked about his directorial web series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ and called it his “biggest” project.
“I’ve surprised myself with this one,” remarked Sanjay Leela Bhansali regarding ‘Heeramandi’, his latest directorial venture. Speaking of the project, he emphasized its magnitude, dubbing it as his “biggest” endeavor yet.
“I’ve crafted grand films, relishing in their vastness as it aligns with my natural inclination. However, transitioning to the digital realm pushed me further. ‘Heeramandi’ stands as my magnum opus; I aimed to infuse it with a distinctiveness, and I’m pleasantly taken aback by the outcome,” he shared.

Elaborating further, Bhansali expressed, “It transcends mere serial storytelling; ‘Heeramandi’ unfolds into a world of its own. I eagerly anticipate global audiences immersing themselves in its opulent narrative on Netflix.”
Marking his debut in the OTT domain, Bhansali is poised to unveil ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ web series. The ensemble cast includes Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal, each contributing to the rich tapestry of ‘Heeramandi’.
Set against the backdrop of Heeramandi, Lahore (now in Pakistan) during the pre-independence era of India, the series delves into the interwoven power dynamics amidst burgeoning anti-colonial movements.
Netflix India unveiled the first look on Instagram with the caption, “Here’s your inaugural glimpse into the visionary world of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s maiden series: Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar!”
‘Heeramandi’ stands as one of Bhansali’s most ambitious projects to date. Reflecting on its significance, he previously stated, “It’s an epic saga, unprecedented in its portrayal of the courtesans of Lahore. The scope is immense, and the challenge daunting, but I am eagerly anticipating our collaboration with Netflix to bring ‘Heeramandi’ to audiences worldwide.”
