‘Laapataa Ladies’ actors Sparsh Shrivastava and Nitanshi Goel opened up about their roles in Kiran Rao’s upcoming directorial venture during a conversation with ANI.

“Firstly, the script itself grabbed my attention. When I initially received the audition material, which comprised just four pages, I was already intrigued. Those four pages resonated deeply with me. I thought, if these few pages are this impactful, then the entire script must be exceptional. Moreover, the film’s message advocating for the empowerment of girls, urging them to break free from societal constraints and early marriages, struck a chord with me,” Sparsh Shrivastava revealed.

He further elaborated on a poignant message conveyed by his character, Deepak, in the film, emphasizing the importance of men expressing their emotions. “Often, we suppress our feelings, but this film beautifully addresses that issue. Additionally, the opportunity to work under the direction of Kiran Rao was an immense motivation for me to be a part of this project,” he added.

For Sparsh Shrivastava, working with Kiran Rao not only enhanced his acting skills but also contributed to personal growth. “Throughout the filming process, I evolved as an actor under her guidance. Many unexplored emotions surfaced, enriching my performance. I must say, working with her not only made me a better actor but also a better individual,” he reflected.

Nitanshi shared her perspective on what drew her to the script and motivated her to join the project. Recalling her audition for the character Phool, she disclosed, “I received three scenes for the audition, unaware that it was Aamir sir’s film or directed by Kiran mam. However, those three scenes resonated deeply with me, compelling me to become part of this project.”

She then discussed her preparation process for the role, emphasizing her efforts to authentically portray a woman from the early 2000s era. “Since the story is set in 2001, and I was born in 2007, I had to immerse myself in that era’s essence during the audition. I studied the body language of Bhojpuri women by watching films like ‘Sui Dhaaga’ and ‘Balika Badhu,’ as well as various videos. I wanted to embody the essence of those women through my performance, even in the audition,” Nitanshi explained.

Detailing her audition experience and the emotional moment of meeting Aamir Khan, she expressed, “Upon receiving positive feedback from Kiran ma’am, and learning that Aamir sir wanted to meet me, it was an overwhelming moment for me and my family. It felt like a dream come true. Meeting Aamir Sir was incredibly humbling, and I learned a lot from him. Kiran Ma’am’s dedication as a director is commendable.”

‘Laapataa Ladies’ narrates the story of two young brides who become separated during a train journey in rural India in 2001, and the ensuing investigation by Kishan, a police officer.

The film garnered a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival and is produced by a team renowned for hits such as ‘Delhi Belly,’ ‘Dangal,’ and ‘Peepli Live.’

Presented by Jio Studios, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions. The screenplay and dialogue are penned by Sneha Desai, with additional lines by Divyanidhi Sharma. ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is set to release in theaters on March 1. (ANI)
