On the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee took a pledge to carry on with the struggle to protect rights of the deprived. Mr Banerjee in his X handle wrote: “On Martyrs’ Day, in reflection on the profound influence Mahatma Gandhi has had on my life and the conscience of every Indian citizen. His teachings continue to inspire me at every juncture.
Today, it’s tragic to witness the insult meted out to our labourers through repeated reprehensible attacks on MGNREGS, a programme that bears the name.
On Gandhiji’s death anniversary I solemnly pledge to persist in the noble struggle to protect the rights of the deprived.” It may be mentioned that Trinamul Congress chairperson has called to observe dharna on 2 February to protest against the inordinate delay by the Centre to clear the dues of the workers engaged in 100 days’ work under the MGNREGA scheme.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had met the Prime Minister and urged him to expedite the move to clear dues of the workers. Despite the PM’s assurance, nothing has been done so far. Mr Banerjee had made a scathing attack on BJP on Monday on the issue.
From his post on social media it is evident that Trinamul Congress is going to intensify its movement demanding dues of the workers. Miss Banerjee has already asked the leaders and workers to go to the people and make them aware how the Centre has deliberately withheld the funds. Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, state agriculture minister, garlanded the statue of Gandhiji on Mayo Road.
