Biwi no. 1 re-release: Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor’s comedy classic returns
'Biwi No. 1' is a comedy about a businessman, Prem (Salman Khan), who juggles an affair with a model while his wife, Pooja (Karisma Kapoor), plans her revenge.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s uphill battle to cast Simi Garewal in ‘Karz’ unfolds, showcasing persuasion and a commitment to dignity in this iconic 1980 film.
Renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai recounted the challenges he encountered while convincing Simi Garewal to take on the role of Kaamini in ‘Karz.’
He informed ANI, “The greatest difficulty I faced was signing Simi because she initially refused the role. She expressed concerns, saying, ‘Subhash, this story is good, but I cannot play the role; I would be portrayed as a vamp.’ So, for five nights, I had to dine at her place, engaging in PR to persuade her. I told her to reconsider as the role was excellent. She insisted on choosing a different character, despite having limited work at that time, sticking to her convictions.”
Ghai assured Garewal that he would uphold her dignity in the film, stating, “I made her understand that I would maintain her dignity, assuring her not to worry. I envisioned the character differently, and she suited the role.”

Revealing the process of casting for the 1980 film ‘Karz,’ Ghai said, “When I was writing the script, Kamini’s character was pivotal, possessing both dignity and a negative trait. As a director-writer, crafting such a character involves a lot of unseen hard work. Each character, like Tina Munim and Simi Garewal, is distinct. ‘Karz’ is a musical replay of the story; you convey the narrative through music.”
Reflecting on the film’s lasting success, Ghai expressed surprise, “Even today, kids know me as ‘Karz wale uncle.’ People still watch and enjoy it. I’m amazed it didn’t perform well at the box office initially, but I was told I made the film 10 years ahead of its time. Even today, the movie feels as fresh as it did in 1980.”
Subhash Ghai directed and Akhtar Romani produced ‘Karz,’ released in 1980. It features Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal, Pran, and Raj Kiran in key roles. The storyline revolves around Monty Oberoi, a young musician experiencing recurring nightmares about a past life, unraveling the mystery of his reincarnation as Ravi Verma. Simi Garewal portrayed Kamini Verma, the main antagonist.
The film’s music, especially the iconic ‘Om Shanti Om,’ gained immense popularity. ‘Karz’ had several remakes and adaptations, attesting to its enduring popularity. (ANI)
