Calcutta High Court today nixed permission to the Indian Secular Front Nawsad Siddique to hold a rally near Victoria House while rejecting the petition for lack of credibility that the rally would not create any trouble. The Division Bench of chief justice T S Sivagnanam rejected the petition after hearing both the parties of the government and the ISF.

Chief Justice Sivagnanam during the hearing on the case observed that there was trouble at Esplanade last year during the ISF meeting. It also stated that on that day there were multiple events like marathon run, car rally in the city. They should hold the meeting at an indoor stadium but the ISF counsel did not agree. The government counsel also countered that Netaji Indoor was already booked for a children’s programme.

The chief justice also observed that the state govt was ready to provide a place about 2km away from the Victoria House, on whether the ISF was ready to accept, to which the ISF counsel countered the ruling government did not want to give permission to hold a rally there.
