Cardinal Pizzaballa, Pope’s representative, offers to trade places with Israeli children held by Hamas in Gaza, seeking their freedom.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Patriarch of Jerusalem and Pope Francis’ representative in Israel, expressed his willingness to exchange himself for Israeli children who are being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. During a video conference with journalists in Italy, he made this statement, emphasizing his strong desire to secure the freedom and return of the children. Cardinal Pizzaballa affirmed his complete readiness for such an exchange and expressed no reservations about it.
Tragically, children were among the casualties during the recent terror attacks near Gaza at kibbutzim. In response to this situation, Pizzaballa extended his offer to Hamas. He mentioned that while he has not initiated formal contact with Hamas regarding this offer, he acknowledged the significant challenges involved in such negotiations.
It’s important to note that Cardinal Pizzaballa was one of the signatories on the Statement on the Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza. This statement condemned attacks on civilians, called for de-escalation of the conflict, and urged the Israeli government to permit the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza during the 2023 Israel-Hamas War. However, this statement faced criticism from the Israeli foreign minister, Eli Cohen, who found it “inconceivable.”

Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM, an Italian clergyman, has held the position of Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem since November 6, 2020. Prior to this role, he served as the Custos of the Holy Land from 2004 to 2016 and as Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate from 2016 to 2020. Notably, Pope Francis elevated him to the status of cardinal on September 30, 2023.
Pizzaballa has voiced concerns and objections regarding Israel’s construction of a barrier separating the West Bank from Jerusalem.
