In what comes as a relief to the pandal hoppers, chief minister Mamata Banerjee vir- tually launched theYatri Sathi app that is expected to give some oxygen to the iconic yellow taxis.

The app includes mainly a large number of yellow taxis that were running using the old meter system so far and have been demanding a hike in basic fares. The fleet of vehicles operated using the new app has been joined by numer- ous other online app cabs that were operating under other aggregators in the city. The app has been developed by the state information tech- nology and electronics department.

Theappwasfirstintroduced sometime in July. The pilot project included taxis plying at Howrah station and city airport. The police in the two busiest parts of the city were helping the commuters and the drivers get used to the new app. After a trial of more than three months, the app was launched officially at four places in the city today to ease out the travelling of commuters during the pujas.
