Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Wednesday said the party will be forced to come out on the streets if radical preacher Amritpal Singh was not arrested along with all those guilty of laying siege and attacking policemen at Ajnala police station in Amritsar recently.
In a letter to the Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday, Warring said radical preacher Amritpal Singh has been spitting venom and is out to destroy the hard-earned peace of Punjab and its communal harmony.
The Congress leader said he had written a letter to the DGP about four months ago “regarding the dangerous and nefarious activities of radical preacher Amritpal Singh”.
“Neither any note of my letter was taken and Nor was any check maintained on his activities. He has now got so emboldened that he had the audacity to lay siege to a police station in Ajnala, attack the policemen and take away his aide, who is accused of assaulting and kidnapping an individual,” Warring said in the letter.
“This was something unprecedented and never heard of. Even during the dark days of terrorism never did such an incident occur. The police never felt so let down and demoralised even when they were facing the worst type of terrorism in the history of the state,” he added.
“Such indifference and inaction at the highest level is not acceptable to us anymore and the reasons for this are best known to you, that Amritpal has the audacity to do what he is doing. After all, the policemen who were attacked in Ajnala and suffered injuries are our own people,” Warring said.
Describing Punjab Police as the best police force in the country, the Congress leader said it has an unparalleled record in fighting for the country and sacrificing their life to ensure peace.
“So many police personnel even lost their near and dear ones during the fight against terrorism. I am sorry to say that the same police were made to suffer the brutal attack by some goons, just because they were asked not to react,” he added.
Warring said “not just the Punjab Police, the incident has shaken the faith and confidence of common Punjabis in this government. They feel that if the police are not safe themselves how can they protect the common man. So many policemen have suffered serious injuries and one of the officers, an internationally reputed Olympian, had to get 21 stitches on his head”.
“And the irony is that those responsible for it are roaming scot-free and cocking a snook at the government and the police. This is unacceptable to us. Please take immediate action. We assure our full support to you,” the Punjab Congress president said.
