A day after Nair Service Society (NSS) General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair said the UDF lost 2021 Assembly polls because Ramesh Chennithala was projected as the Chief Minister candidate, the senior Congress leader on Monday said that the Congress had not nominated anyone for the post of Chief Minister in the last election.

Speaking to media persons here, Ramesh Chennithala said that neither the UDF nor the Congress projected anyone as the CM candidate during the campaign for the last assembly elections.  “The stance taken by the party was that the elected MLAs would decide the CM after the election,” said Chennithala.

In a recent interview given to an English daily, NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair has said that the UDF lost the last Assembly polls because Ramesh Chennithala was projected as the CM. “It would have won had it been stuck to Oommen Chandy,” he said.

Chennithala said that he was not projected as a ‘Nair brand’ by anyone and that the Congress party and he always uphold a secular position and will continue to do so.

“I will always remain secular. The Congress party has always taken a similar stand. I was not projected as a chief ministerial candidate in the 2021 Assembly election,” said Chennithala.

“For the past 45 years, I have been upholding that secular stance in public and personal life. So, I will always be a part of secularism. There is no question of going back from it. I have always been a Congressman and the Congress Party is the biggest for me. I grew with the party and carried out responsibilities entrusted to me. I don’t want to respond to what Sukumaran Nair said,” Chennithala said.
