The year 2022 will be remembered as the year of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi politics with the party winning the battle of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), uprooting 15-year rule by the BJP.

Now, the city is all set to get a ‘double-engine government’ led by the AAP in January 2023.

The BJP has been using the metaphor of a ‘double-engine government’ for delivering good governance. In 2022, the people of the National Capital voted for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, the ruling party in the state to control the MCD to resolve the local civic issues.

Earlier this year, the Central government unified the three corporations – East Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and North Delhi Municipal Corporation – into one MCD.

After a Union Home Ministry notification, the total number of MCD wards in Delhi was reduced to 250 from earlier 272. As many as 42 wards are in the reserved category.

This year, the MCD polls were held on December 4 while the counting of votes was held on December 7

The AAP won 134 of the total 250 wards in the national capital’s civic body polls. The saffron party came second by winning 104 wards. The Congress managed to get nine wards while three wards were bagged by Independents.

After his party secured a comfortable majority in the MCD polls, Chief Minister Kejriwal thanked the people of the national capital for bringing a change and sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s blessings for making the city a better place to live.

All political parties campaigned hard for the MCD elections with the issue of cleanliness in the city figuring prominently in the political discourse.

Seeking to put the AAP on the defensive during the campaign phase for the MCD polls, the BJP released several video clips purportedly showing jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain receiving privileged treatment behind bars.

While one clip purportedly showed Jain receiving a personalised body massage, another showed the minister purportedly digging into a five-course meal.

While the BJP built its civic poll campaign around the purported clips, claiming that Jain was receiving privileged treatment behind bars at Tihar jail, the AAP denied the charge saying that Jain was only being administered physiotherapy on medical advice.

This year on May 26, Vinai Kumar Saxena was sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. On May 23, Saxena, the chairman of Khadi and Village Industries Commission, was appointed Delhi’s new Lieutenant Governor

Among other issues which dominated the year 2022 in the National Capital was Delhi Excise Policy row and the arrest of Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain in money laundering case in May.
