According to a new report by The Information, tech giant Google is showing interest in acquiring Nuvia.
Nuvia is a start-up led by former Google and Apple employees design, and the company designs SoCs and CPU cores, also the Apple Silicon M1 chipset’s “Chief Architect ” was Nuvia’s.
However, in March 2021, one of the largest smartphone chipmakers, Qualcomm, which makes Snapdragon processors, acquired Nuvia as a Qualcomm subsidiary. And The results of Nuvia’s work are already evident in Qualcomm Oryon, a product that is based on work done at Nuvia.

The new Google angle in the story is particularly intriguing because it’s highly likely that Google was pursuing Nuvia in part for its own Tensor processors.
Google is looking for its own chipset designers with ready-to-use bespoke Arm cores; if somehow they acquire Nuvia, then they wouldn’t have to depend on Exynos chips in the future, which are manufactured by Samsung.
Currently, the Tensor G1 and G2 SoCs are being used in Google Pixel 6 and 7 lineups. The latest Tensor G2 is based on 5nm.
