The recovery of five bodies in the past three days from different parts of Delhi has triggered a debate on the preparations to check deaths caused due to cold across the city.

The preliminary examination has raised speculation that all five may have died of cold, as no sign of assault or injury marks were found on their bodies. All of them were reportedly found sleeping in the open on footpaths or other open spaces.

Police have sent all the recovered bodies for the post-mortem examination and are waiting for the post-mortem examination report for further clarification over the deaths. An inquiry into the matter is being conducted.

According to the police, these unknown five bodies have been recovered from the areas of Mandir Marg, Mangolpuri, Lahori Gate, Karol Bagh and Anand Vihar Railway Station and the police of the concerned police stations are trying to identify them.

A police source said that all the dead bodies have been recovered between December 19 and 21, in abandoned condition on footpaths and other open places.

As stated by the police source, the first dead body was recovered on December 19, from the Gol Market situated in the area of Mandir Marg police station. The deceased, who appears to be around 55 years of age, was found lying in the open.

The second body was recovered in the Mangolpuri area on the same day. The deceased, who appears to be of age around 30 years was recovered from near DSIDC Complex. The third body of a 45-years-old person was found lying near a police booth located near Avanti Bai Chowk situated in Lahori Gate Police Station on December 20.

The same day, another body of a 60-year-old senior citizen was recovered from the Karol Bagh area, while the fifth body of a 50-year-old was recovered from Anand Vihar Railway Station’s platform number 2-3 on December 21.

 As stated by the police, the deceased are yet to be identified. Police are trying to establish their identity by connecting with other police stations.

During inquiry, it came to fore that all the deceased were homeless and used to sleep on footpaths and other open spaces. Based on the initial inquiry, it is being speculated that the death may have happened due to cold. However, the investigation is in progress to ascertain the truth behind the deaths.
