The Indian Army is using drones to chase away Pakistani drones crossing the Line of Control (LoC) to drop weapons and drugs for terrorists in Kashmir.
Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, on Tuesday, said on the sidelines of the Poonch Link-Up Day that the drone challenge from Pakistan was effectively being countered.
He said terrorists operating in J&K are facing shortage of weapons and Pakistan is sending consignments of pistols, grenades and drugs. “Small weapons are being used to target non-J&K labourers who come here to earn their living.
He said that huge quantities of drugs are being pushed to this side of the border for narco-terrorism and in June last year heroine worth Rs 45 crore besides weapons were seized in Baramulla.
The Northern Army Commander said that the number of terrorists active in Jammu and Kashmir is around 300 that includes 82 Pakistanis.
He said what is worrisome is that there are almost 170 unidentified terrorists tasked to attack soft targets.
The Army commander said that all efforts are afoot to prevent and foil terrorist attacks at the security forces and civilians across the UT.
He said about 160 terrorists are lodged by Pakistani agencies at various launch pads along the LOC for infiltration into J&K.
About security situation post abrogation of Article 370, the GOC-in-C said that the security scenario has witnessed a big change with peace and development prevailing.
About recruitment of local youth in terrorist outfits, Lt General Dwivedi said 35 percent of the recruitment comprise youth below 20 years of age and the remaining 75 per cent include the youth between the age of 20 and 30 years. “It is time for parents to keep a watch on their children and ensure proper upbringing. These youth need to study and see the world outside. We have sent 1800 youth to various parts of India for studies,” he added.
