A fresh incident of violence was reported on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh over the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act. Police had to resort to a lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
According to the UP Police, the clashes took place after some of the protesters allegedly threw stones at the police, after which the police resorted to the action. The protesters also set a transformer ablaze near Jama Masjid in the city.
As per the reports, a police vehicle has been vandalised by the mob and some police personnel have been also injured during the clash.
“Protestors pelted stones at Police vehicles so Police had to resort to teargas to disperse them,” Aligarh District Magistrate Chandrabhushan Singh said.
“Some women students from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are behind this, we are trying to identify them. We are ascertaining the damage caused by rioters and it will be recovered from them. The situation is under control now,” Singh was quoted by ANI as saying.
“We have held peace meetings and asked Muslim community leaders, including the Imam of the Jama Masjid, to act as interlocutors,” he added.
In order to bring the situation under control, a Rapid Action Force (RAF) of the Uttar Pradesh has been deployed.
As reported by NDTV, the violence is centered in a two-kilometer area around Aligarh’s Uparkot Kotwali area.
A group of women protesters had approached the police asking for permission to erect tents as protection from inclement weather. After the police denied permission, they staged a sit-in protest.
