Senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has filed a petition in the Supreme Court over the Kashmir issue which would be heard on Monday by a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi along with Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer. Azad has moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to visit his home state to enquire about the well being of his family members.
Azad had tried to visit the state but was sent back from the airport by authorities. In his petition, he has also sought permission to check on social conditions in the state after the clampdown imposed by the authorities in the aftermath of revocation of Article 370.
The top court would also examine various other petitions, including the one filed by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury who has challenged the detention of his party colleague Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami. The court will also hear other petitions related to the various issues after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5. These petitions deal with issues related to Jammu and Kashmir post the revocation of the special status granted to the state by the Constitution.
Sajjad Lone, the chief of the Jammu & Kashmir People’s Conference has also moved the Supreme Court challenging the abrogation of Article 370 while the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko has filed a habeas corpus petition in the apex court to produce senior National Conference leader and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah.
Anuradha Bhasin, the editor of Kashmir Times has filed a plea seeking relaxation on media movement in the Valley and asked the government to file a response in a week. The SC will also hear another habeas corpus plea filed by law graduate Mohammad Aleem Syed who has submitted a report in a sealed cover about the situation in the Valley when he went to Anantnag to meet his parents.
