Chief Selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BBCI), MSK Prasad, has stated that KL Rahul’s form has been indeed a cause of concern in Test matches and the board might consider Rohit Sharma as an opener when selecting the team for South Africa’s tour of India.

Notably, Rahul managed to accumulate 44, 38, 13 and 6 in two Test matches against West Indies. Although he managed to get starts in the first Test, he failed to convert them into big scores. In the next test match in Jamaica, he did not even manage to get starts in both the innings.

To put things into perspective, Rahul has not scored a half-century since his 149 against England at the Oval which came twelve innings back.

“As selection committee, we haven’t met after the conclusion of the West Indies tour. We will definitely take this (Rohit as an opener) point into consideration when we all meet and discuss about it,” Prasad told India Today Network.

“KL (Rahul) is definitely a great talent. Of course, he is going through a bit tough time in Test cricket. We are definitely concerned about his form. He needs to spend more time on the wicket and regain his touch and form,” he added.

Earlier former captain Sourav Ganguly, who was responsible for pushing Virender Sehwag to the opening slot during his stint as captain, had backed Rohit Sharma to open in Test matches.

Rohit Sharma enjoyed a great run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, slamming a record five hundreds in the tournament but was not part of the Playing XI in the test matches against West Indies.

India will now host South Africa in three T20Is and as many Test matches at home beginning on Sunday.
