The former veteran all-rounder of the South African cricket team, Lance Klusener, has been named the batting coach for senior men’s South African team. The announcement has been made for the T2O International segment of South Africa’s tour of India scheduled in September.
The 47-year-old South African, often counted as one of the greatest all-rounders of his times, is best remembered for his heroics with the bat lower down the order in the 1999 World Cup.
His records are a testimony to his dominance in World Cricket as he has accumulated 1906 runs and 80 wickets in Tests in addition to 3576 runs and 192 wickets in ODIs. Klusener is expected to report to the freshly appointed interim team director Enoch Nkwe.
Meanwhile, former South African assistant coach Vincent Barnes was named the assistant coach of the bowling department and former batsman Justin Ontong was named as the assistant fielding coach. Both will oversee South Africa’s tour of India.
“In terms of the new team structure, the Team Director appoints his three assistant coaches who have specific skills focus in the three key disciplines of batting, bowling and fielding,” CSA Acting Director, Corrie van Zyl, said in a statement.
“Former Proteas all-rounder Lance Klusener will fill the role of assistant coach (batting) for the T20 Series only as he is currently not available for all formats.
“His (Klusener) record as one of the best all-rounders in the world, particularly in white-ball cricket, during his playing career speaks for itself and he also has extensive coaching experience both at franchise and international level,” the statement added.
In terms of coaching experience, he has coached domestic side Hollywoodbets Dolphins from 2012-2016 and then went on to be the coach for the Zimbabwe Cricket team. He was set to join Glasgow Giants as a coach but the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam competition was cancelled in 2019.
