A day after three fire incidents occurred in the buildings of state-run telecommunication service providers Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information TechnologyRavi Shankar Prasad ordered a high-level inquiry on Tuesday.
Two major fire incidents had occurred at MTNL Bandra Telephone Exchange, Mumbai and in BSNL building at Salt Lake, Kolkata and one minor fire incident occurred in MTNL building at Kidwai Bhawan, New Delhi yesterday.
No casualties of the employees or other persons in the building at the time of the incident were reported. The government in a statement said that the causes of fires are being established.
A total of 84 persons were saved from the fire that erupted at the MTNL exchange building in Mumbai at around 3 PM yesterday. It was completely controlled by 3 AM in the morning, the ministry said.
Prasad also ordered that BSNL and MTNL should conduct fresh Fire and Safety audit of each of their buildings/installations in a time-bound manner.
According to the statement from the government, the last fire audit of the building was conducted a year ago on July 12, when the building was found to be compliant.
