Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-ruled government pointing out the arrest of lawyer and human rights activist Sudha Bharadwaj in August last year who, in March this year, was honoured with a prestigious award by the Harvard Law School.

“When Harvard Law School was honouring Human Rights Lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, our government was busy arresting her. While the government did nothing to stop willful defaulters from fleeing country, they were desperate to offload an activist from plane only to be rapped by Delhi HC,” said Tharoor in Lok Sabha.

Bharadwaj was arrested by Pune police in connection with Bhima-Koregaon violence that had occurred following the “Elgar Parishad” meeting in December, 2017.

Tharoor also took a dig at the government, highlighting the alleged irregularities in the implementation procedure of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and the hardships the people had to endure because of it.

“57 people in Assam have committed suicide because the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has excluded them. Ironically, the majority of these people are Hindus,” said Tharoor.

The NRC is being updated under the monitoring of the Supreme Court in Assam and July 31 has been set as a deadline for final publication of the registered data.

The government has requested the Supreme Court an extension in finalising the NRC list, since many genuine names were left out and many bogus names were registered.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, earlier this week in Rajya Sabha, had said that the government is committed in its task to identify and deport the illegal immigrants living on every inch of the country’s soil.
