Thousands of demonstrators marched onto the streets for the third consecutive day in Israel after an off-duty police officer killed an Ethiopian origin young man sparking tension on Thursday.

An Ethiopian-Israeli teen who was shot by an off-duty police officer sparked a wave of protests across the country on Wednesday.

Dozens of police personnel were deployed in the town of Kiryat Ata near the site of Sunday’s killing in northern Israel where protests in the previous two nights saw tyres being burned and roads blocked.

The protests were far less intense than the previous two nights.

According to the Israeli Police, more than 140 people have been arrested and 111 officers have been wounded, many by stones, bottles and petrol bombs thrown at them.

One of the arrests was of a 27-year-old man accused of setting fire to a car in Tel Aviv in an incident that led to police rescuing the driver, police said.

However, police warned earlier on Wednesday they would not allow road blockages as demonstrators were attempting to disrupt traffic in a number of locations across Israel.

Both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin called for calm while acknowledging that issues facing the Israeli-Ethiopian community must be addressed.
