Middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, confirms The Indian Express on Wednesday.
Notably, Rayudu was not included in the 15-member squad for the World Cup as all-rounder Vijay Shankar was preferred over him for the much debatable no.4 spot.

Justifying Shankar’s selection over an experienced Rayudu, chairman of selectors MSK Prasad had told reporters, “After the Champions Trophy in 2017, we tried quite a few people in that (no.4) position. We did give a few more chances to Rayudu. Vijay Shankar is three dimensional. We are looking at him at no. 4 to begin with.”
Rayudu was rather kept as a reserve player. But as luck would have it, Rayudu missed the flight to England and Wales twice after Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar were ruled out of the World Cup due to injuries, and Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal were called for their respective replacements.
Rayudu last played for India during the home series against Australia in March where he scored 33 runs in 3 ODI innings.
Rayudu has played 55 ODI matches for India and scored 1,694 runs at an average of 47.06, including 3 centuries and 10 half-centuries.
For around 18 months, the right-handed batsman was groomed for the no.4 batting spot for India but eventually failed to find a place there.
Rayudu is a right-handed middle order batsman, an occasional wicketkeeper and a right arm off-break bowler.
