A good posture is one of the basic requirements to maintain a healthy body. It is important for a number of reasons. It places your body in an alignment where the stress on supporting ligaments, tendons and muscles is limited. Don’t arch your back or lean forward or backwards. Lift the phone at eye level and don’t tilt your neck towards shoulder while talking over the phone. Keep your chin up – parallel to the ground. Talking with your chin up reduces strain on back and neck. Gently pull your shoulders down and back by lifting your chest. Observing the correct head alignment and lifting your chest, you should feel taller than normal. It’s better to use a headset, Bluetooth or speaker rather than using the mobile phone. When in use, hold cell phone away from your body. Never use it if signals are weak. Try to text more and talk less. Looking down can strain back and neck ligaments. Focusing downwards can increase forces on the neck by five times or more leading to a poor posture and acute pain. Right posture will limit your phone usage as well.

While using your mobile phone for computer work, raise it up instead of bending your head to look down. Your head should be in a healthy neutral position to avoid all sorts of neck problems, including early wear and tear, degeneration and possibly the need for surgery. Hold it at eye-level while typing. At this position, your shoulder muscles tire quickly and this pose just looks funny. It will force you to use your phone for short periods of time. Comfortable positions allow you to use your phone for long hours. You may also lie on the floor down on your back with bent knees and flat feet on the floor. Then hold your phone over your face to text and surf the internet. If your device has the feature of voice transcription, use it for texts, messages, social media posts and emails. Don’t use your phone for extended computer work. Removing social media, email and games from your phone is highly recommended to minimize your mobile phone usage and thus physical problems. It only requires a little bit of self-discipline.
