One terrorist was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Jammu-Kashmir’s Sopore town in Baramulla district on Wednesday morning.
According to reports, the gunfight erupted on Tuesday evening and continued overnight.
Security forces, comprising personnel from the Army’s RR, SOG Sopore, 92 CRPF battalion and J-K Police, launched a cordon and search operation on Tuesday afternoon after receiving specific inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
The search was launched in Wadoora Payeen village of Sopore town.
Reports quoting a police official state that the terrorists fired at the personnel as the cordon was tightened.
“An unidentified terrorist was killed in the ensuing gunfight. The body has been recovered while his identity and group affiliation is being ascertained,” a police official said.
Arms and ammunition was also recovered from the slain terrorist.
The police advised people to stay clear of the site of the encounter.
Security forces were continuing their search and clearing the encounter site of explosive material.
Reports say that ADC Sopore has ordered the closure of all all government and private educational institutions in Sopore as a precautionary measure. Mobile Internet services have also been suspended in the area.
In a separate encounter, two terrorists were gunned down in J-K’s Shopian on Tuesday. A joint team of the Army’s RR, SOG and CRPF cordoned off Awneera village of Shopian after receiving information of the presence of terrorists.
The encounter began when the terrorists fired at the forces. Two terrorists were killed and their bodies recovered. Arms, ammunition and other incriminating materials were also found, a police officer said.
