England have begun their World Cup Campaign on a winning note by beating Scotland 2-1 in their opening clash in the England-Scotland match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019.

A goal from around the penalty area by Nikita Parris put England in the lead. This goal was followed by another from Ellen White just before the second half to double the lead going into the final half.

Scotland, who are making their World Cup debut, were smart enough to take advantage of a laid back start made by England in the second half as Claire Emslie brilliantly converted a poor pass from England captain Steph Houghton to a goal.

However, Scotland couldn’t score the equaliser after reducing the lead to 2-1. Nonetheless, this was a much improved performance from Scotland after their 6-0 defeat against the same opposition in Euro 2017.

Scotland are ranked 20th in the world, which is 17 positions lower than the England side, who are ranked 3rd. To play a well-fought match against a top-rated side would have given a lot of confidence to the Scotland team.

In Women’s World Cup 2019, Phil Neville’s England will now meet Argentina in Le Havre on Saturday, 15 June (IST) while Scotland’s next Group D game will be against Japan in Rennes on 14 June (IST).

While Japan are world number 7, Argentina are placed at the 37th place.
