Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday removed ‘Chowkidar’ from his Twitter name as trends indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was returning to power with a massive majority.

The PM, who added chowkidar (security guard) to his Twitter name months before the elections, said that the time has come to take its “spirit to next level”.

“Now, the time has come to take the Chowkidar Spirit to the next level. Keep this spirit alive at every moment and continue working for India’s progress,” he said in a tweet.

“The word ‘Chowkidar’ goes from my Twitter name but it remains an integral part of me. Urging you all to do the same too!” the PM added.

The PM had launched the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign in March calling everyone fighting corruption, social evils and working hard for the progress of India, as watchmen.

“Your Chowkidar is standing firm and serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar,” Modi said in a series of tweets.

“Today, every Indian is saying. Main Bhi Chowkidar,” he added.

Following PM Modi’s tweet, several BJP leaders also used the #MainBhiChowkidar hashtag and tweeted. The entire top BJP leadership added the word to their social media names.

In the run up to the elections and during the campaigns, Congress president Rahul Gandhi repeatedly attacked PM Modi with the “chowkidar chor hai” jibe.

Today’s verdict was a major win for the BJP as it went past the 300 mark on its own. At the time of writing the BJP was ahead in 305 seats. The NDA was ahead in 355, one more than what it won in 2014.
