Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Asansol and Union Minister Babul Supriyo was, on Sunday, heckled by a crowd of locals who also raised slogans of “go back” against the singer-turned-politician, reports say.
The incident occurred when Supriyo was talking to the media after casting his vote at a booth in Jorasanko in the North Kolkata Lok Sabha constituency. Sensing trouble, Supriyo immediately left the spot.
Before leaving, the sitting Asansol MP blamed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party, Trinamool Congress (TMC) for creating the unruly scene.
“I have come here just to cast my vote and I was interacting happily with you all,” Supriyo told reporters before leaving.
“Trinamool has lost all its credibility and when they say that they do not believe in violence, people won’t believe them,” he added.
He tweeted: “As usual I was heckled by #TMchhi goons when I went to vote with my Mum&Dad in Kolkata(N) constituency•Interestingly, check how accurately I predicted the same to the media, asking them not to take my byte because any moment the Mamta’s #TMchhi wil accumulate to abuses us
He also said that the TMC has made it a common practice to claim that BJP candidates create ruckus wherever they go.
West Bengal is voting for nine remaining parliamentary constituencies in the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Sunday.
In the fourth phase of the elections on 29 April, Supriyo’s car was damaged, allegedly by TMC workers in his own constituency.
Supriyo had joined the BJP in March 2014 and was fielded by the party from Asansol. Supriyo won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections defeating Dola Sen of the TMC.
