Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday warned that any tampering with the special status of Jammu and Kashmir will render the Treaty of state’s accession with India “null and void”.
In a series of tweets, following the arrest of top Jamaat-e-Islami activists and deployment of additional paramilitary forces in Kashmir, Mehbooba said, “Valley rife with speculation about status of Article 35. Before taking a decision GOI (Government of India) must consider J&K was the only Muslim majority state that chose a secular India over Pakistan during partition. Article 370 is the Constitutional connection between J&K and Indian Union”.
In another tweet, she said, “Instrument of accession is contingent on Article 370 which is inextricably linked to Article 35A. Any tampering will render Treaty of Accession null & void”. “Those frothing at the mouth & calling for its removal shouldn’t blame Kashmiris for the developments that will follow such a hare brained decision”, she warned the centre.
In her other tweets during the day Mehbooba said; “There is a sense of unease and panic in Kashmir. Nobody has a clue about what is to come but an ominous feeling of impending doom hangs in the air. In such a surcharged atmosphere, public anger has been diverted towards Kashmiris”.
“They have never been subjected to this kind of unbridled hostility. You want Kashmir yet wage a war against its people? What are they being punished for? Why brutalise them? She asked.
