SIT visits Saharanpur villages to probe hooch tragedy

A Special Investigation Team led by Additional Director General (Railways) Sanjay Singhal visited the villages affected by the recent hooch tragedy in Saharanpur and recorded statements as part of an investigation into the incident that claimed 65 lives.

The ADG arrived in Saharanpur from Lucknow on Tuesday night. He first met two other members of SIT – commissioner of Saharanpur division CP Tripathi and IG of Saharanpur range Sharad Sachan.

Late in the night, DM Saharanpur Alok Kumar Pandey and SSP Dinesh Kumar P also met the ADG and other officials of SIT and gave them an account of the tragedy. The discussion of the officials continued till late night.

On Wednesday the team met the administrative and police officials and spoke to family members of the victims, the villagers and village pradhan to gather information connected to the probe.

The team first visited Umahi village where 15 villagers lost their lives in the hooch tragedy. They recorded the statements of the family members of the victims. Media persons were kept away when the team was recording the statements of which the videography was also carried out by the team.

The SIT then visited Sarbatpur village of Gahalheri area and recorded the statements of the family members of the victims. From here the team moved to village Salempur where family members of victims from villages Shivpur, Bilaspur, Mayaheri, Khera Mugal, Tajpur and Sankhowali were also called to record their statements.

The team also met the victims of the hooch tragedy who are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

The SIT is expected to submit its report to the state government in the next two days.

The hooch tragedy claimed lives of over 65 persons in more than a dozen villages of the district.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an inquiry shortly after the tragedy following which the SIT was formed.
