Manchester United’s caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels David de Gea could establish himself as The Red Devils’ greatest goalkeeper. On Sunday, De Gea made 11 saves as United beat Tottenham 1-0 at Wembley.

During his playing days with Man Utd, Solskjaer played alongside Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel. “We’ve had some great keepers at this club and I think he’s challenging both Edwin and Peter for the number one spot historically,” Solskjaer said.

With the help of De Gea’s 11 saves United make it six wins from six under their new manager Solskjaer. Gae’s 11 saves against Tottenham was also his highest in a Premier League game while also keeping a clean sheet.

The Spanish goal-keeper came to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and so far won the club’s player of the year award in four of the past five seasons.

“He should have held a couple,” joked Solskjaer, before adding, “We had a good back four and David in behind them was unbelievable. You are allowed to have a good goalkeeper.”

Solskjaer further said, “I’ve played with a few fantastic goalkeepers. We have a tradition of having them and he has grown and grown. He deserves that man of the match today.”

A run of five straight league wins under Solskjaer means United, in the sixth, are level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal and are six points off the Champions League places.

With their win over Spurs, United, who are currently placed sixth at Premier League table, have levelled level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal, and are six points off the Champions League places.

“We still believe we can finish in the top four,” said the Spaniard. “We are United, we have good players and we are fighting to finish in the top four.

“It was very good, especially at Wembley. It was three very important points. I am very happy with my performance and the team is playing very well, creating chances and playing more attacking football,” De Gea said.

“We have had three clean sheets in a row, which is very good. The players are happy, you can see that on the pitch, and they play with passion, like Manchester United.”
