P Chidambaram, former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader, questioned Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader claimed that no major terror attack took place since 2014.
In a series of tweets written in Hindi, Chidambaram, who had also served as the Union Home Minister for a brief period during UPA rule, accused Sitharaman of giving a clean chit to Pakistan in the 2016 Pathankot and Uri attacks.
“The Defence Minister said that there has been no terror attack from Pakistan after 2014. Will the Defence Minister pick up India’s map and locate Pathankot and Uri?” wrote Chidambaram.
“By saying these attacks were not from Pakistan, is the Defence Minister giving a clean chit to Pakistan in respect of the Pathankot and Uri attacks?” he said in the second tweet.
Sitharaman had made her claim at the BJP National Council on Saturday.
“BJP workers should highlight two things. First, that there has been no major terrorist attack after 2014. All attempts to wreak havoc in the country have been eliminated at the border itself and this government has ensured that there are no opportunities for terrorists to disturb peace.
“And second, that we have had corruption-free five years. There has not been even a whisper of corruption in this government,” Sitharaman said.
On 2 January 2016, terrorists from Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed attacked the Pathankot Air Force Station killing 7 security force personnel and a civilian. All the terrorists involved in the attack were killed.
On 18 September the same year, four heavily armed terrorists attacked the Indian Army brigade headquarters in Uri killing 19 soldiers. All four terrorists were also killed.
