The biting cold caused due to the overnight snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir has claimed the lives of five persons of a single family who were on Saturday found dead in a room due to asphyxiation in Srinagar.

The biting cold caused due to the overnight snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir has claimed the lives of five persons of a single family who were on Saturday found dead in a room due to asphyxiation in Srinagar.

The family belonged to the Tangdhar area of Kupwara district and had reportedly come to Srinagar for medical treatment of a woman. They had rented a room in the Bemina area of Srinagar.

Among the killed were 2 children, 2 women and a male member of the family.

Initial reports suggested that they get suffocated due to leakage of gas from the heating pot.

Meanwhile, normal life has been thrown out of gear in the state because of heavy snowfall and intense cold.

The Kashmir valley remained cut off since Friday evening, due to closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Weather department has predicted heavy snow and rain in the state.

J-K Traffic Police said that the vehicular movement has been stopped on the Jammu-Srinagar highway due to snow accumulation in the Banihal, Nowgam and Jawahar Tunnel sectors.

It was snowing heavily on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel. The Mughal Road linking Shopian in Kashmir with the Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu has also been closed for traffic. The plain of Jammu region was experiencing rain since last night.

Men of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were engaged in clearing snow from the roads.

The Srinagar-Kargil road is already closed since the past few days and might reopen after four months.

Meanwhile, Kashmir’s divisional commissioner, Baseer Ahmad Khan, has issued an avalanche warning for nine districts of the valley. This includes, Anantnag, Kulgam, Badgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipura, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh.
