India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara on Thursday slammed a solid and gritty century during the first innings of the opening Test match against Australia and in the process completed his 5000 runs in the longest format of the game.
Pujara took just 108 innings to reach the mark of 5000 runs, with the help 16 hundreds and 19 fifties. Pujara has also become the joint fifth fastest batsman to score 5000 runs in red ball cricket. Former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid has also taken the same number of innings to reach the 5000 Test runs.

India’s batting great Sunil Gavaskar (95 innings) was the fastest to score 5000 Test runs followed by explosive batsman Virender Sehwag (99 innings). Indian skipper Virat Kohli (105 innings) is the fourth in the list just behind Sachin Tendulkar (103 innings).
On Thursday, Cheteshwar Pujara also joined the elite list of Indian cricketers who have scored a century on the opening day of a Test match outside the sub-continent.
