PM Modi holds series of meetings with G20 leaders

On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the PM began the day by meeting Argentine President Mauricio Macri over breakfast at the latter’s official residence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of meetings with leaders from the G20 nations on Saturday in Buenos Aires.

On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the PM began the day by meeting Argentine President Mauricio Macri over breakfast at the latter’s official residence. The two leaders held discussions over a host of matters ranging from agriculture to space.

“In a special gesture, President of Argentina @mauriciomacri hosted PM @narendramodi over breakfast at his official residence. Good discussion on cooperation in agriculture & food processing, space, defence, oil & gas & civil nuclear energy,” tweeted MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

Following the meeting with the Argentine President, PM Modi held a series of meetings with other world leaders on the margins of G20 Summit.

Modi discussed strengthening India-EU relations, including joint effort to counter terrorism in all forms, with President of EU Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council president Donald Tusk.

The PM and German Chancellor Angela Merkel strengthened strategic partnership between India and Germany.

“PM @narendramodi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met on the sidelines of #G20Summit. Leaders  exchanged views on importance of multilateralism in a rapidly changing world and the need to strengthen cooperation in counter terrorism,” tweeted Kumar.

The PM also held a special meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The South African president has accepted India’s invitation to be the Chief Guest at Republic Day during 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez were among other leaders that the PM met.

At the second session of the G20 Summit on Friday, the PM had presented a nine-point action programme against fugitive economic offenders and called for a strong and active cooperation across G20 countries to deal with fugitive economic offenders and facilitate asset recovery.

Modi said there was a need for a joint effort by member countries to form a mechanism that denies entry and safe havens to all fugitive economic offenders.

The prime minister also suggested that the G20 forum should consider initiating work on locating properties of economic offenders who have tax debt in the country of their residence for its recovery.
