Athawale said that he will soon meet Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss the matter.
“Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar led several social movements conceptualised by him thus It will be appropriate to name Mumbai Central station after him,” Athawale said.
“Dalits welcomed the renaming of Mumbai International Airport and Victoria Terminus after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We would also be happy if Babasahebs name is given to Mumbai Central railway station,” the Union Minister said.
Athawale is the president of the Republican Party of India (A), an ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). An MP from Rajya Sabha, Athawale represents Maharashtra in Parliament.
In July this year, Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road station was rechristened Prabhadevi following a decision approved by the Maharashtra Assembly on 16 December 2016.
In 1996, the Victoria Terminus – the main railway station of Mumbai – was renamed ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai’ after the legendary Maratha king.
In June 2017, the name of the station was slightly altered with the addition of the word ‘Maharaj’. It is now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai’.
