Manchester City fans started the week with a massive cheer as the club revealed that star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has returned to training for the first time since suffering a knee injury in August. 

The Belgian midfielder played only 30 minutes of the defending champions’ opener of the season, a 2-0 away win at Arsenal, before hobbling off and has been missing in action since then.

De Bruyne, widely regarded as the finest central midfielder in the English top-flight, comes back at a time when the fixtures are relentless.

The Sky Blues take on Hoffenheim in a must-win UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday night before visiting Anfield for a summit Premier League tie on Sunday.

While De Bruyne is not expected to take part in the Hoffenheim match, he might be utilised by Pep Guardiola for the game in Merseyside.

City haven’t done too shabbily without their midfield general, as they remain top of the Premier League with a tally of 18 points from seven games.

Things haven’t been as impressive in Europe, however, as they slipped to a shock home defeat to Lyon on Matchday 1.

 

De Bruyne was initially expected to be out of action for a period of upto three months, but seems to have made a swifter than expected recovery to increase the competition for a starting berth in the Sky Blues midfield.

With Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Ilkay Guendogan, Phil Foden and De Bruyne all available now, Guardiola is really spoilt for choice and it will be interesting to see how the Catalan manager tinkers with his formation and starting XI.
