Police said the Chowgam encounter between security forces and terrorists broke out in the early hours of Saturday.
An officer said the encounter started when a joint team of Army, CRPF and Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police cordoned the area following reports of presence of militants of the two outfits.
While three terrorists were neutralised within a few minutes after the encounter began, the remaining two trapped terrorists were killed later.
Train services in the Valley have been suspended as a precautionary measure.
The police described the Chowgam encounter as a huge success as the group was a combination of HM and LeT terrorists. They said these militants were involved in a series of terror acts, including the killing of two bank employees and many policemen.
They were also involved in bank robberies and weapon loots, said the police.
The security forces had on Thursday killed eight Pakistani terrorists in three separate encounters in J&K.
