Despite Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad’s recent statement that there was no proposal to deport Zakir Naik, India on Thursday said its request for the extradition of the controversial Muslim preacher was being seriously considered by the Malaysian authorities.

“We have an extradition treaty with Malaysia. In January, we made a formal request for his (Naik) extradition. At this stage, our extradition request is under consideration,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told the media.

India, he said, was in regular touch with the Malaysian authorities in this regard through its High Commissioner in that country.

However, there is palpable anxiety in Indian circles following the Malaysian PM’s statement that his government would not give in easily to India’s demand to deport the Naik for alleged terror activities and money laundering.

Asked about the progress in bringing absconding diamond jeweller Nirav Modi back to India to face the Indian law, the MEA spokesperson said the Interpol had last week issued a red corner notice against him. Following this, New Delhi had asked its missions abroad to draw the attention of their host governments to the red corner notice and seek their support in its implementation.
