After a dust storm and rain lashed Delhi on Saturday, residents of the national capital woke up to a cloudy morning on Sunday. The meteorological department has predicted light rain or drizzle.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 30 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average, according to an official in the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“The sky will be generally cloudy with the possibility of light rain or drizzle,” the official said.

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius.

At 8.30 am, the humidity was recorded at 71 per cent.

Reeling under sweltering heat for a few weeks now, Delhi got some respite after receiving moderate to heavy rains and duststorm on Saturday.

Saturday’s maximum temperature settled at 40.1 degrees, a notch above the season’s average, while the minimum was recorded at 30 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average.

According to the Safdarjung observatory, the wind speed recorded on Saturday evening was 96 kmph. The dust storm left many trees uprooted. As many as 35 incoming flights were diverted from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), and Delhi Metro services were disrupted too.

The weather office had recorded 4.5 mm of rainfall was recorded till 8.30 pm in Delhi.

The dust storm caused snags on a few stretches on Delhi Metro, due to which services on the Red Line and the Blue Line were affected briefly.

“Due to sudden dust storm and rain around 5 pm, there were a few cases of track circuit signalling drop reported on Line 1 (Red Line) and Line 3 (Blue Line) and external object striking overhead electrification near Janakpuri East,” said a senior DMRC official.

The high-velocity winds disrupted airport operations too.

“Due to inclement weather in Delhi, 35 flights were diverted to nearby airports. Flights could not be operated at @DelhiAirport from 5PM to 5:57PM. Our Delhi ATC managing diversions & bringing back diverted flights in safe, orderly & expeditious manner. Safe flights our prime aim,” Airports Authority of India tweeted.

According to a PTI report, the Delhi Police received 99 calls about uprooting of trees, 39 calls about fallen poles and 13 calls regarding wall/roof collapse across the capital.

The downed trees and the subsequent rains led to traffic snarls in several areas.
