Odisha CM announces steps for advocates; asks lawyers to join Mahanadi battle

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a slew of measures for advocates and, interestingly, called upon the lawyer’s community to join the “battle for Mahanadi and help save the pride of Odisha”.

He called upon the lawyers to join the Save Mahanadi Movement launched by the ruling BJD.

Addressing the BJD Legal front meeting here, the Chief Minister said steps are being taken at the government level to declare Madhusudan Law College as a Law University.

“The Advocates’ Welfare Fund will be enhanced from the present three crores to five crores from the next year. We also propose to establish an “Advocates Academy” for training and skill development of lawyers of the State”, he announced.

Legal illiteracy is a major drawback in securing justice and protecting rights and liberty of common people, he observed while hoping that the BJD Legal Front will strive towards creating an atmosphere of adequate legal literacy among the people.

The government has initiated several measures to ease access to justice to the people like establishment of courts in all 314 blocks, special courts for women and ST, SC communities, appointment of Judicial Officers, organisation of Lok Adalats, Legal Aid Clinics etc, he said.

The Madhubabu Aain Sahayata at the Panchayat level is one of the most progressive and dynamic initiatives of the government to provide instant and easy access to justice to the weaker sections of society at their doorsteps, said the CM.

The Odisha State Law Commission has been constituted to aid and advise in matters of legal reforms and qualitative legislation relevant to the current times.

Law Minister Pratap Jena assure the advocates that the government is aware of problems faced by them and was working on several fronts to resolve them.
