West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid tributes to children book author Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury on his 155th birth anniversary.
Banerjee in her tweet said, “Tribute to children’s author Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury on his birth anniversary. Many of his works including Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and Ţunţuni’r Boi have become classics.”

Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a famous Bengali writer, painter, violin player and composer, technologist and entrepreneur.
He was the father of the famous writer Sukumar Ray and grandfather of the renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a product and leading member of the Brahmo Movement that spearheaded the cultural rejuvenation of Bengal.
Upendrakishore’s greatest contribution was in the field of children’s literature in Bengali. His prominent works include the fantasy “Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne”(on which Satyajit Ray based his acclaimed children’s movie with the same name), children’s verses in “Ţunţuni’r Boi”, and the children’s versions of the Hindu epics – “Chheleder Ramayon” and “Chheleder Môhabharot”.
Upendrakishore did most of the illustrations of his books himself.
