A Jodhpur court on Thursday convicted Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, while other actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre were acquitted.

The ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ actor has been held guilty of killing two blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur in October 1998 during the shooting of the film “Hum Saath Saath Hain”.

Salman has been convicted under Section 51 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The quantum of punishment in the case will be announced after 2 pm.

On 28 March, the final arguments of the case were concluded in the trial court, after which Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri had reserved his judgment.

In case, the actor is convicted for more than 3 years, he will have to move a sessions court for bail.

For the past 20 years, the two witnesses from the Bishnoi community have maintained that Salman killed the blackbucks even though the actor’s defence has argued that the antelope died after falling into a pit.

The actor was previously acquitted in two other poaching cases involving a chinkara deer and another blackbuck – both in Rajasthan. The Rajasthan government has challenged the verdict in the Chinkara deer case in the Supreme Court.
