Promises made by BJP for Jammu’s growth have proved hollow: Dr Abdullah
Dr Abdullah made these remarks during the commemorative function honouring the 92nd birth anniversary of the Late Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma.
Six BJP members, including four women, were injured when a group of persons allegedly led by the Trinamul Congress attacked them when they reached the Itahar Block Development Office to file their nomination papers for the upcoming Panchayat elections.
According to sources, the miscreants at first snatched the nomination papers from the BJP candidates and then started assaulting them. “BJP members were forced to run away from the spot and they had to take shelter at their Itahar party office,” they added.
Following the assault on the BJP candidates, the Vice-President of the North Dinajpur BJP committee, along with a number of BJP members, turned up at the block office and started demonstrating in protest against the attack on their party men.

The BJP candidates who fell victim to the assault have been identified as Sebi Barman, Uma Barman, Pari Barman, Tarulata Barman, Tarun Mahato and Surya Murmu, all representing the party in the Jaihaat Gram Panchayat.
A complaint was filed at the Itahar police station, seeking immediate arrest of the criminals. “We six, including four women, had gone to the BDO’s office to collect the nomination papers. Apparently, a group of TMC activists approached us and ordered us to surrender our nominations to them.
As we refused to give away our papers, they snatched them from our hands and started hitting us. They did not even think twice before hitting our women members. We did not find any police nearby and we had to flee from the place to save ourselves,” BJP member from Jaihhat, Surya Murmu, said.
The President of the Itahar TMC block committee, Md Isrile, however, claimed that his party had no hand in the attack. “Candidates are collecting and submitting nomination papers here lawfully. Two TMC members have submitted their nomination papers in Itahar on Monday, while four submitted their papers on Tuesday. We have no connection with the assault on the BJP members,” Mr Isrile said.
