The Italians had stormed into a 2-0 lead thanks to a first-half brace from Gonzalo Higuain but the Lilywhites made a remarkable comeback to ensure spoils were shared.
Higuain, notably, missed a penalty to complete his treble to take the Bianconeri out of sight and Allegri’s men were left to rue the Argentine’s miss on the night.
Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen scored the all-important away goals for the Premier League outfit to give them a small edge ahead of Wednesday’s return leg at Wembley Stadium.
However, after their last-gasp win in the Serie A over Lazio courtesy of a stunner by Paulo Dybala on the weekend, the Italian giants will be backing themselves to progress to the quarters of the continental competition to keep hopes of a treble alive.
They trail leaders Napoli, who have played a game less, by just a solitary point and are in the final of the Coppa Italia as well.
