Priya Prakash Varrier is the toast of all the love-struck guys this Valentine’s Day. With just a wink (literally), the Malayalam teenager became an overnight sensation in the country triggering everything from memes to 30-minute-long interviews on national TV.
The song, “Manikya Malaraya Poovi” from Varrier’s debut film ‘Oru Adaar Love’, has already garnered over a million hits on YouTube riding on the clip showing the 18-year-old from Thrissur.
But while the nation is falling in love with the cute young actress, Jignesh Mevani found in the viral video a political statement worth using.
On 14 February, the newly-elected MLA from Vadgam in Gujarat posted the viral clip along with a comment in which he takes a dig at Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
“Viral hit of ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ is the answer to RSS’s Valentines Day protest and Again Indians have proved that they like to love more than hating someone [sic],” he tweeted.
Fringe groups have been protesting against Valentine’s Day celebration in the country for years now. Their contention is that the concept of an exclusive day for lovers is foreign and, therefore, not in line with India’s culture.
