A man identified as Harshal Raote died after falling from the fifth floor of the Mantralaya building in Mumbai on Thursday, 8 February.

According to reports, police took the 45-year-old man to the hospital for treatment immediately after he fell but he was declared dead on arrival.

BJP leader Vinod Tawde, who is also a member of the Cabinet in the state, told reporters that Raote’s father told the leaders that Harshal was serving jail term in a murder case and was out on parole.

The police are yet to determine whether the man committed suicide or was his fall an accident.

Reports say that Raote was found lying in a pool of blood in the open space inside the state secretariat.

A case has been registered by the Marine Drive police, who are also scanning the CCTV footage.

Identification papers recovered from him reveal that Raote was associated with an NGO and working for the Maharashtra Rajya Vidhi Seva Pradhikaran, while lodged in an Aurangabad Jail.

According to Sachin Salve, the Jail Superintendent of Paithan Open Jail, Raote was sentenced to 14 years in 2014 for the murder of his sister-in-law in 2003.

Following the incident, opposition leaders attacked the government for the spate of suicides in the state government headquarters. There have been two similar incidents in the last two weeks.

An unemployed Ahmednagar resident called Avinash Shete, 32, had on Tuesday attempted to set himself on fire. He was saved by the security personnel and arrested.

On 28 January, Dharma Patil, and 84-year old farmer from Dhule, had consumed poison inside Mantralaya and died a week later while under treatment.
